How is this course structured?

You may study English for Cambridge exams at the following different levels:

  • Preliminary English Test (PET)
  • First Certificate Test (FCE)
  • Cambridge Advanced English (CAE)
  • Cambridge Proficiency English (CPE)

To follow a Cambridge exam preparation course with ESE you must be 16 years old and have a minimum language level relevant to the level of the exam you choose to sit for.

The levels required are as follows:

  • You must have an intermediate level (B1 CEFR) of English to apply for PET
  • You must have an upper intermediate level (B2 CEFR) of English to apply FCE
  • You must have an advanced level of English (C1 CEFR) to apply CAE
  • You must be proficient in English to apply (C2 CEFR) to apply for CPE

If you are not yet at the required language level, you can join one of the European School of English’s other English language courses before enrolling in the Cambridge examination preparation course of your choice.

The Cambridge examinations are held in Malta in March, June, August (FCE and CAE only) and December. Start dates for the Cambridge courses depend on the level and examination you can follow. The course is 8 weeks long.


The Cambridge exam course comprises 30 lessons of 45 minutes each per week in groups of not more than 10 students.

Before booking you will be asked to sit for a pre-entry level test, to write an essay and to participate in a telephone interview with our Director of Studies.

You can continue to improve your English though self-study by accessing our e-Learning programme from the time you enrol on your language course until three months after you finish your course.
